How to find a doctor who takes CHAMPVA

CHAMPVA doesn’t have a network of doctors. You can see any licensed provider who accepts it, and most care doesn’t need approval first. The hard part is finding out who accepts it.

1. Start with offices that already said yes

Our directory lists doctors, clinics and hospitals in Northern Utah. Offices marked Confirmed told us directly that they accept CHAMPVA, with the date they said so. Put in your ZIP code to see the closest ones first, and pick a type of care to narrow the list.

2. Call and ask the exact question

For an office that isn’t confirmed yet, ask: Do you accept assignment for CHAMPVA? Then ask whether they’re taking new patients. What “accept assignment” means explains why the wording matters. If they answer, tell us and we’ll check with the office and update the listing.

3. Know what needs approval first

Most care doesn’t. CHAMPVA requires approval before inpatient mental health care, care for alcohol or substance use disorders, some dental care, and organ transplants. The office usually asks for it.

4. Hospitals are a special case

Hospitals that take Medicare have to accept CHAMPVA when you’re admitted. Hospital stays and the Medicare rule explains what that does and doesn’t cover.

5. If you have Medicare

If you’re eligible for Medicare, CHAMPVA requires you to have Medicare Part A and Part B, or a Medicare Advantage plan. Medicare pays first and CHAMPVA pays after it, so ask the office whether it takes Medicare and will bill CHAMPVA second.
