A list of offices that said yes
CHAMPVA Confirmed is a free list of doctors, clinics and hospitals in Northern Utah that told us directly they accept CHAMPVA and TRICARE. Families on these plans are usually told to call around and ask. We ask each office once, publish the answer, and ask again every year.
Why it exists
CHAMPVA covers the spouses and children of veterans rated permanently and totally disabled by a service-connected condition, and some survivors. It has no network, and VA doesn't publish a list of doctors who accept it, so families are told to ask each office.
TRICARE covers service members, retirees and their families. Its directories focus on network providers. Many offices outside the network are still TRICARE-authorized but are harder to find, so families are often told to call and ask.
How an office becomes Confirmed
We email each office one short question for each plan:
- CHAMPVA: “Does your office accept assignment for CHAMPVA?”
- TRICARE: “Is your office TRICARE-authorized?”
When an office answers yes, its listing says Confirmed with the date it answered. Within 12 months we ask again, and the date updates when it answers. If it stops answering, it goes back to Not yet confirmed. If an office turns you away, tell us and we'll check with it again.
Offices don't pay to be listed and can't pay to be listed higher. Nothing on this site is for sale.
What each status means
- ConfirmedThe office told us yes by email or phone. The date shows the last time it did.
- Required for hospital staysA hospital that has to accept the plan when you're admitted, under federal law. See below.
- Website says yesThe office's own website lists the plan, but the office hasn't answered us yet.
- Not yet confirmedA real office from the federal provider registry that hasn't answered us yet. It may or may not take the plan.
- Does not acceptThe office told us no.
Hospitals and the Medicare rule
Federal law (42 CFR 489.25) says a hospital that takes Medicare must also accept CHAMPVA and TRICARE for inpatient stays, meaning when you're admitted. The rule is about the hospital: you don't need Medicare yourself. It doesn't cover ER visits where you go home the same day, outpatient tests or surgery, or the hospital's own clinics, so those still need to be confirmed. We match hospitals against the CMS list of Medicare-certified hospitals.
